When Evelyn, a witch, flees from her vampire ex-situationship after stealing a treasure from her, she winds up in a realm between realms, Threshold. But the problem is, if you arrive in Threshold, you must join the Cwn Annwn, piratic and corrupt protectors of Threshold, or die. When the captain of the ship that rescues her, telekinetic Bowen, meets her, the two are instantly attracted to one another. However, Bowen is unquestionably loyal to the Cwn Annwn while Evelyn is suspicious of them and plans to escape even with the threat of them hunting her for the rest of her life. While outrunning her vampire ex Lizzy and dealing with a mutinous crew, Bowen and Evelyn grow closer and closer and can’t help but give in to their romantic and sexual attraction. Ultimately, Evelyn helps Bowen to realize what he’s been reluctant to admit all along - the Cwn Annwn are corrupt and do not stand for the same things he does. This is the first in the series, ending with the pair feeling hopeful as they join a rebel movement alongside Lizzy, who is still intent on recovering the now missing treasure Evelyn stole. I love how in this fantasy world Katee Robert provides just enough backstory so you understand what’s going on without delving so far into world-building that the erotic romance backbone is lost. And I also love that in this fantasy world no one is assumed male or female - every new character is given they/them pronouns until their personal pronouns are revealed, and many characters use neopronouns.
