People often recommend against starting the series with this book, even though it introduces some of the themes, because it's pitched at a younger audience and has a lot less subtlety. It's true, and yet I always begin my rereads here, because Susan Cooper is great at portraying sibling relationships, and is amazing at describing moments of tension like Barney's crawl deep into the cave alone...

I wouldn't start here for a first time, maybe, but it's worthwhile all the same.
