The Eustace Diamonds by Helen Small, Anthony Trollope

3.0

Trollope is always delightful and comforting for me, and this was a perfect listen as I’ve been wrapping up the holidays. It’s the 3rd in his Palliser series, and I gave it 3 stars because it’s a bit long and drawn out in sections. But it’s a hysterical satire of greed and dishonesty among the elite in Victorian London, and I very much enjoyed it. In this Palliser series the books are a bit longer, and it feels like Trollope is trying to flush out and tackle specific government and societal issues, often by detailing the inner workings of people and organizations within the plots. He does it in a very entertaining way, and it is informative, but it can also drag a bit. I’m still glad I read it and will continue with the series when the mood strikes me.
