The Black Echo by Michael Connelly
4.0

After having watched the Amazon Prime series of Bosch, I was inspired to read this first outing of the hardened detective and I have not been disappointed. It is clear that Michael Connolly is an executive producer on the TV series as the Bosch on the screen (portrayer by Titus Welliver) is very similar to the Bosch in the pages. I love that Bosch is a Vietnam veteran who is driven by a strict code to make sure his cases are solved and the perpetrators are caught. In many ways, ‘The Black Echo’ is like the hard-boiled detective stories of old but it also presents a protagonist who is haunted by the ghosts of his past. Bosch may not always follow the rules and there is a great range of action, touching moments and comedy within this novel which makes it feel more realistic than some other overly sensationalised police novels.
