I read this last month sometime when I was being lazy with my goodreads. As you all should know... Beverly Jenkins is my Shero. Although I adore her work with intertwining interesting historical tidbits I never knew before with an I triguing romance, this book was not one of my favorites. I had no qualms with the writing, that was exquisite. my beef was with the male lead. He just irritated me to no end. This does not take away from this story by much but I spent quite a bit if this book rolling my eyes at him. Granted, it is more than likely because I have never been in the shoes of a biracial man during the era of slavery. I simply did not like his methods of handling life.
I loved the female protagonist because... Beverly Jenkins writes fantastic female leads and does a great job of making the reader feel familiar with the book by tying it into previous books. Set in a time period of slavery, this could have easily been one of those sad stories we all read all the time. However, Jenkins aimed for a Happily Ever After and achieved it by showing a different spin on a dark era.
