Beware of Chicken

I went into this for book club knowing nothing about Xianxia as a genre, though i do play a lot of rpgs and read chinese lit. This certainly didn't sell me on it.
Writing was rough and felt unedited. The humor didn't land for me at any point. I only really enjoyed the animal's povs tbh.
What really made me put the book down (which i hate doing for book club) were the undertones of casual sexism and rape culture. I get trying to worldbuild, but this isnt a grimdark fantasy setting. It just needled at me so badly, I had to nope out. Every female character is a caricature, even the damn rat girl is afraid of being raped by the rat man. all cultivators are known as power hungry rapists - except the only female cultivator that they come across ofc. and she's just SO thankful that she wasnt taken advantage of by mc while she was injured. it's all treated so casually and callously for a professed lighthearted book, obviously written by someone who just knows its bad and is using it to add drama to a story with 0 plot. and i can't even articulate how much i disliked the protagonist. when he has a single speck of possible character conflict/growth he just Gets Better with a word from his fiance. tl;dr, a power fantasy for a 14 year old boy. Not for me.
