Allegiant by Veronica Roth

This book hurt me.

I hadn't read Insurgent since July of 2017 and so going into it I had to relearn the characters all over again. Plot-wise the book was ok. I've read some pretty nasty reviews about how the whole pure-vs.-damaged-genes plot line was really unbelievable and maybe so but I could see what Veronica was trying to mirror. One of the biggest things YA novels try to do is be relatable and her trying to incorporate a sense of prejudice made sense. Although i struggled to understand the plot line she chose and was kinda disappointed it had built to it, i guess the blow didn't hurt so bad since it had been so long since I had read the others books. Number one reason why I hate waiting to finish a series for so long. Besides, i think the worst mistake she made was killing off Tris. It wasn't simply because my heart was destroyed but because it really didn't add anything to the plot. It made the ending really open and more anti-climatic despite her attempt at a unsettling plot twist. Tris's death was successful at surprising me but did it help the book overall? That is the real question. Also, Four's reaction was much more heartbreaking than her actual death just saying.

I gave this book 5 stars because the ending stayed with me. Most of the time I don't get emotional over YA novels anymore because its hard to feel connected to a character before they get killed. YAs are short, predicable, and lets be honest boring. It's nice for something I at first expected to be just another lame attempt to be like Harry Potter, actually decent. the series overall was pretty good, and I try to stay true to the whole series instead of just one book in the installment anyway. I did however like Divergent the best. This book managed to do just enough to get me and while there were some flaws, I admit I overlooked them for the way the ending made me feel. I haven't felt pain over a fictional character in a while. Maybe not the best series ever, but it proved itself and for that i give credit where credit is due.
