Magic
The magical elements are not portrayed as fantastic but rather scary and cruel. Cruel in a way that you know someone is behind the terrors, yet you can’t exactly blame them. What do I mean by that? No one is without a flaw, and most people are driven by desire. Desire does not equal bad. Passion can be to live happily in peace, gain power and wealth, etc. However, desire can be turned bad if the situation allows it, and perhaps with some help from dark forces, desire can be deadly.

Horror
How Ellerie managed to sleep at night was a mystery in itself. I do not recommend reading it right before bedtime since some scenes made me just as scared as Ellerie was. The way that Erin describes some of the settings can make anyone shiver. I do love the bits and pieces of horror in the book. It gave me the chills while knowing the ending will be happy and sound (which is the author’s note in the very beginning, so not a spoiler).

Names
I did love the twist with names, and I have been thinking about what names mean and symbolize some time after. Names should describe a person. A name is supposed to fit you, and I can’t agree more with Ellerie. I might not identify with a “Karen,” but I still think my name suits me.
