I don't think I have the words to accurately express the range of emotions I felt when reading this book. It was tragic yet beautiful, harsh but wonderful, gloomy and radiant. The prose produced vivid imagery, and if you're from Appalachia, it did so in ways that you dream of daily. Every word made sense and added layers of depth that came through Demon's words and perspectives. This book struck close to home, considering my mother was a victim of the opioid epidemic that hit our region with no remorse. Reading about Demon's trials and tribulations with his own mother and then himself only made me respect this piece of work more, and the stances on Big Pharma made me appreciate Kingsolver and her talents. Not to mention, I loved the strips of Appalachian history woven into the main framework to create the full masterpiece that is Demon Copperhead. I encourage everyone to give this book a genuine try; I understand if it isn't everyone's bread and butter in terms of subject matter, style, or dialect, but it will give you a taste of history and experiences that tend to be left out of textbooks. This book will haunt me for the rest of my days, and I've come to learn that haunting can be just as good as it is shaking.
