I was "forced" to read this book for school as many others in Portugal but out of all the books we had to read, this one was by far my favourite. It's a book I still grab to reread today, many years after graduating from school. It's definitely not for everyone but I think you won't know if you like it or not until you read it. I love Saramago's writing style, his creativity and specially his humour.
