The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown

5.0

A few months before I read this, I mentioned Brene Brown to my therapist after hearing about her for the first time. When she responded, "MALAYA, you need to read EVERYTHING she has written!" upon me just saying her name, I knew I was in for a treat. (A challenging one, but still, a treat.) I still was not prepared for it to be this good.

This book was exactly what I needed. I am a notorious perfectionist and overthinker. I have insecurity and anxiety issues that I've been working on for years. Most of the time, I really just need someone to put words to my feelings and subconscious, unhealthy habits in order for me to finally recognize them. That's what this book did again and again for me.

Brene Brown's language is very readable and understandable. She breaks down the ideas she has formulated through her many years of research into definitions and explanations that make sense. There is a kindness that you can feel through her words as you progress from chapter to chapter. I felt empowered, supported, recognized, and less alone in these issues that I deal with because of the way she addressed them. Often times, I would read a sentence and think, "Wow, that hits really close to home, but end up hopeful anyway because of the approach she has.

I have so much love and appreciation for what Dr. Brown does and can't wait to continue working on her lessons and reading more material. I recommend this to anyone and everyone (as well as her interview with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday and her Ted Talks-- I have yet to finish her other books).
