Taming Demons for Beginners by Annette Marie

5.0

This was a quick read only because I couldn’t put it down.

Robin is staying at her uncle’s home waiting to gain access to the inheritance her parents left that her uncle is hoarding. There she meets a demon, Zylas, who was summoned by her uncle. She was told not to interact with the demon, but one accidentally dropped cookie changed everything and Robin’s curious nature couldn’t be ignored. All leading up to an illegal contract between them and the start of a crazy and dangerous search for the truth.

I loved this story. Robin is a relatable character with social anxiety that makes it hard for her to handle confrontation. Zylas is a great demon. Unlike most stories involving a male demon and a female human, there isn’t any softening of Zylas to make him more of a love interest for Robin. He does exactly what a deadly demon would do in the same situation and I loved it. It made their dynamic more realistic.

The story was well paced and, because Robin is familiar with but not an expert in the magic arts, the explanations on how things work don’t seem forced. Robin needs to know so we, the reader, get to understand alongside her. Very well done.
