First book above 1,000 pages-what a ride. Although Jamie and Claire's reunion was touching, it wasn't as strong as the first two books. Plot-wise, a lot of scenes felt too drawn out whereas the eventual climax really needed more fleshening out. I also didn't admire Claire's character as much as I previously did, and I kept wondering if Gabaldon was explicitly trying to make her unlikeable. Her fatphobia and the misogyny connected to that was painful. Even more so did the blatant racism and white saviour complex throughout the novel take a lot away from the escapism to entirely consider it as enjoyable. "Different times" is fine and all, but a romance should know its limits. Criticisms aside, I loved a lot of the characters and the story was intruiging as always and I'm excited to see where else the story takes Claire and Jamie (I say, as if I haven't already watched the TV adaptation).
