when i first started reading this, the heroine gave me so much second hand embarrassment that i almost dropped it. but, i decided to give it more chance and now, i’m glad i did.

i’d say that yes, this heroine is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. she has a very low self-esteem, she doesn’t stand up for herself when the situation calls for it and her fixation with the duke is lowkey creepy.

however, once you get to know her more, her home life, and how she was scorned and abused her entire life, her disposition just makes so much sense. she’s always been alone, treated like a pest by her own family. abused, both physically and mentally. being told that she amounted to nothing. and then she met this one person, the duke and she fell, hard.

i think her fascination with the duke is akin to that a fangirl supporting their favorite kpop idol. if you ask those girls, they would tell you that supporting their faves makes them happy, gives them strength and it helps them get through their tough days. i think that’s exactly what’s going on with isabel here. he was the sole light in life that is shrouded in darkness.

i loved seeing the duke falling head over heels with her as the book progresses. one thing i’d like for them to do more is communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively but i understand why both sides kept their feelings in check because they’re afraid to cross each other’s boundaries.

initially, i was going to give this book a 4 star, but the translation work was so good that i just had to add one more star. kudos to the translator for such an amazing work. this book reads beautifully.

now…. how am i gonna survive waiting for the next book to come out!
