CivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders

4.0

Not for the faint of heart! Having started with Saunders's collection Tenth of December, then his novel Lincoln in the Bardo, I was surprised at how dark and grisly his first story collection was. He's definitely mellowed. Still, this contains one of my all-time favorite short stories, "Offloading For Mrs. Schwartz." If you're a Saunders fan, definitely read this. His trademark black-humor, basic decency, social commentary, and brilliant creativity are here. But if you're new to Saunders, I'd start with some of his later works.
