I think I would have enjoyed this more if there was better narration. It had all of the elements I typically enjoy: fantasy, political unrest, character development, neat antagonists, etc. but dang the narration lacked much of any vocal variety and overall felt very flat. Most sentences were spoken with the exact same cadence and I found myself struggling to maintain focus. It really felt like a slog as a result. I also didn’t like the default insulting nature of several characters that weren’t even antagonists. I got bored of hearing the main character never being given the benefit of the doubt and always being attacked based on her intelligence.
