Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt

5.0

I’ve read this book more than once and I’ve seen the movie a few times as well. It’s the story of growing up in poverty in Ireland, coming to America and making a new life, and the toll all of that takes on a person.

Frank McCourt and his siblings suffered through cold, hungry winters in Ireland as children after their alcoholic father ran off to England to avoid the responsibilities of parenthood, returning periodically to impregnate his wife and give his children hope that things would get better. They didn’t.

The story is heart breaking but told in a way that was humorous at times, but never gave off the “poor me” vibe. McCourt is a great storyteller. I recommend this book highly.
