i mean yes i’ll give this masterpiece a 5 star rating but it’s actually beyond any rating system. it’s beyond a 5 star. it’s not a novel that can easily be compared and categorized with other novels. it is SO GOOD
the characters and storyline are forever embedded in my mind and heart. there wasn’t enough time with them. Honorée Fanonne Jeffers created something so beautiful, weaving history with personal stories, exploring the ancestors of our main character through her own self-exploration as well as narratives from the ancestors themselves. this novel brings to life the realities and horrors of enslavement, of land theft, Indigenous identity, and much more. and the writing is beautiful!
“this is the tragedy of slavery. these are the grains of power. there isn’t a true innocence for children whose parents are shackled.”
