I listened to the audiobook version. At times, it was too intense to continue, yet I have such an appreciation for the breadth and rawness of the writing. Other reviews might mention the immigrant experience; but really, this is an all-American book, filled with American events like the stresses of poverty and racism and opioid addiction; disconnection. At times, I wanted to talk back to the characters and urge them to go back to Ghana: where they could lead a better life. It's a pioneer story: taking risks and jumping into the unknown for the possibility of a better life, leading to deep heartache.
