Station Eleven
by Emily St. John Mandel
When I read the synopsis of this novel, I never would have guessed what the namesake "Station Eleven" actually would be in this story. The linking factor between the various groups of characters is one that only a talented author could create and cultivate with fidelity. I was blown away by Mandel's ability to make me care so deeply about characters that had limited on-page action, even when those characters were not particulary likeable. Mandel's alternating timelines and perspectives were not too convoluted to follow, and helped create an atmosphere of the apocolypse occuring instantaneously, while also slowly creeping up in the background. The Shakespearean element added another layer of interest to an already multifaceted story. This is a book that I have found myself thinking about often since finishing it, so I know it is a solid 4 star read.
