Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd

4.0

In our world there have always been people using magic. The witches, their Royals, the people and creatures in the know surround us. This story focuses on Paris and the political intrigues of the witches and court, but it observes the interactions from the servants' points of view. Anouk keeps house for Mada Vittora and her witch's boy, and the other beasties, who, like Anouk, were created from animals.

There are some love interests and some magic, a murder, and driving up and down the countryside over and over. Sometimes the interactions or connections don't feel as strong as others, but overall a book that kept me reading. We see some less-creative social tropes (death of the homosexual and the goblins as lower social strata kept down by a system meant to raise the royals) mixed in with an original take on the goblin and witch world. The overall tame result makes the story feel risky to younger YA readers, and like a fun afternoon read for wider readers.
