Bane by Amelia C. Gormley
dark
tense
fast-paced
3.5
Bane is a lot more well-rounded than it's predecessors. It marries the plots of Strain and Juggernaut, which are already pretty different, and brings the series to its conclusion.
While Strain to me almost was more erotica than dystopia romance, Bane has a dystopian action with romance elements. The romantic plots, centering around Darius and Rhys, and Nico and Zach, are pretty prominent, and there are plenty of sex scenes, but there is also a solid action/conspiracy plot going on.
I liked what the book was trying to do with its plot around the virus, and specifically the Jugs. It added elements of xenophobia, though they were not explored in depth.
I would still not call the books plot-heavy - things all happen very fast and pass rather easily. But I actually quite enjoyed that. Mostly because some of the plot points are really rather gruesome, so I was glad things never escalated or lingered in any more detail.
Content warnings include: BDSM (D/s, rough sex, whipping, blood play, scarification), torture (electroshocks, forced orgasm), abduction, violence, infection; Mentions of: forced reproduction, violent torture and death, pedophilia, corruption.
