Warm Bodies
by Isaac Marion
Aaaaalllmost gave this book 3 stars, but ultimately it was a feel-good book and I liked the message. Apathy is a dangerous thing and one of my biggest pet peeves, not to mention one of the biggest problems with society today. And what happens when we stop caring? Does that make us monsters? This book raised these questions with me, and for that, I really appreciated it.
Still, the biggest issue I had with the novel was character development. Other than R, I really didn't feel like I knew the characters or understood their motivations/intentions by the end of the story. Julie's quick acceptance of R's situation and personality felt sudden and disarming, and her father's unrelenting lack of emotion was off-putting rather than tragic. Also had difficulty accepting the "disembodied voice of Perry" in R's head…spiritual? Residuals from his brain matter? Weird conscience firings? Who knows?
At the end of the day though, this book was a quick read and had an important message. Would recommend.
