Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 37
by Mizuho Kusanagi

4.5/5 stars
Kin province is in danger, and Kohka prepares to go to war.
Obviously the dragons were unhappy when Keishuk set up the tournament to look like Su-won and Yona were engaged, but that doesn't stop hearing their opinions on the matter from being fun. Part of why I love Jaeha so much is that I feel like he's Hak x Yona's biggest supporter, but Shin-ah and Kija's reactions were also really great. Kija has been a lot more rowdy since coming to the place and he adds a lot of needed comedic relief to an otherwise dreary feeling arc.
As for the rest of the volume, there is always something special about arcs that utilize previous experiences, as it makes the story feel more cohesive. Seeing the people of Awa make a reappearance and help out Hak and Yun warmed my heart. Additionally, Yona using her knowledge gained from her travels to help Su-won strategize really showcased her character growth and proved she has the makings of a great leader.
It's not anything new, but seeing Hak have to fight past his limits, when he's already so exhausted, is it's own kind of tiring. What makes matters further demoralizing is that in this situation he doesn't have the support of his friends and is essentially fighting alone. I feel like we've been seeing a lot more of that lately, and I definitely prefer when he has the dragons watching his back. I miss those scenes where he and Kija used to fight side by side. And because Hak was feeling sorry for his enemy, I imagine General Rahn is going to play a larger part later on. General Rahn was very energetic, and while I'm not sure I like him, he at the very least is entertaining.
Seeing Kija and Jaeha in Kin province definitely helped put me at ease, but I guess Jaeha can't save the day every time. Seeing the hurt and disappointment on Jaeha, Yun. and Kija's faces honestly had me tearing up. I've never cried over this series out of sadness, but this volume had me close. Yona's forced smile was also really heartbreaking. I imagine Yona feels she has to put on a brave face for the dragons and Yun, but with Su-won that doesn't apply, and ultimately I am glad she was able to release her emotions in some capacity even if it was with him.
