The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney
5.0
I've been a fan of the Wimpy Kid books since the start. Jeff Kinney came to the library I worked at back when book two came out, and I've kept with the series for years now. With the ninth book, you'd expect things to become stale or repetitive, and yet, in many ways, The Long Haul is maybe the funniest and freshest book in the series yet.
The story on this one is really simple and straightforward (a welcome change from the somewhat-meandering nature of some of the earlier titles) in that it's basically a road trip tale. Nothing goes quite as planned and it becomes a Vacation-style slapstick adventure complete with bird attacks, water park woes, and general silliness. As an adult reader, it was cute and quick and fun, and I can't imagine any kid not picking this one up and being absolutely enthralled.
I don't know how Kinney does it, to be honest, but this continues to be a top series for a reason. If you've gotten off the bandwagon for whatever reason, this is a good reason to get back on. Loved it.
