Wings by Aprilynne Pike
3.0

I picked up Wings on a quick library run before I had to be picked up after school. I went to a section, looked at the third row, and chose the most interesting cover on the shelf. I grabbed a random book and split, never expecting to get anything good whatsoever. Turns out, I actually liked Wings and didn’t really want to put it down at all. Granted, I finished it in less than two class days, but I still wanted to read more. I almost never read books without reading the entire series or at least planning on it, but this was a good exception.
It wasn’t one of my favorites, but it was a pretty good entertainment while I was between big books. Wings is about a faerie that doesn’t know she is a faerie at all! Well, she doesn’t know until she wakes up with a flower-that looks suspiciously like a pair of wings, even though fairies can’t fly-growing out of her back. It was certainly interesting to read a different author’s way of thinking about beings that show up in many fantasy books. Fairies are plants and the bad guys are part dog things, and I’ve never read a description quite like Aprilynne Pike has formed. I felt like I was with the faerie Laurel, walking through the woods in the faerie world and suddenly being thrown in a trunk and a frozen river, all while trying to save my dying father without anyone knowing I was a faerie. Oh, and don’t even mention moving to a new high school with a bunch of new people! Laurel has quite the adventure in Wings and Aprilynne makes a wonderful image of exactly what she wants the reader to see.
Wings is a good book for anyone looking for anyone wanting to have a little fun with a book. A bit of mystery and an odd love triangle, this book is good for a rainy day. It surprised me in a good way, when I was expecting nothing and it is fun to get lost in the magic. In the book I learned one thing that I know is true: a dusting of glitter can fix a lot of problems. So there you have it ladies and gents, a magical book for a magical day.
