The Lights of Sugarberry Cove by Heather Webber
2.0
1.5 rounded up. I thoroughly enjoyed other books by Webber so I hate to rate this so low, but really, it was....not great. It's reads like someone Googled "typical family disfunctions and the easiest solutions," printed the results, and turned it into a story.
The "big reveal" I predicted the moment the character was introduced, even though the ending was sweet.
I don't know why every subplot fell so flat. I think the author was trying to do way too much in one book. The plotlines got muddled. I even kept losing track of which character was which because none of them really stood out to me.
It also felt like every single emotion, action, or word had to be explained to the reader - right down to "a finger to his lips in the universal sign of 'shhhh'". Yes, we know that. It's why it's universal.
If you also weren't a fan of this book, I do encourage you to try some of Webber's other books. Her magical realism style is really enjoyable and comforting when it works.
