Ruthless Vows
by Rebecca Ross
Well THAT was certainly a book that was. Written. The last 20 pages were so out of left field and insane I’m left kind of flummoxed.
Anyway, this is a book that hovers between a 3 and 3.5 rating. It’s not BAD, but it doesn’t know what it is. Tonally, it shifts from the mostly romcom rivals to lovers thing it had going in Divine Rivals and picks up way too much plot.
As a plot lover, this isn’t usually a problem for me, except there’s Too Much plot in this book that the first book (imo) didn’t do a good enough job of making you care about. So now you have this relationship you’re reading for, in this kind of fun magical universe, but now it’s a War Story with two divine figures that you really can’t be bothered to care about.
Most of the side characters from the first book fall off, the Forest storyline comes to nothing, and while the Iris and Roman pieces ARE quite good, there’s just not enough of them.
And then the last 30 pages just goes crazy, like how did we get here? I know this is magical WWI but seriously, how did we GET HERE? For the last 15 pages especially I was like What the Fuck.
And that’s still the question that remains for me. What the fuck……that’s crazy work.
