Out of the Woods by Hannah Bonam-Young

adventurous emotional

3.0

I loved Out On a Limb, so I was really excited for this one! The spice was, once again, way outside my comfort zone, but this was another heartfelt and tender romance!

Together since they were teenagers, Sarah and Caleb truly love and understand each other. But when buried emotions rise to the surface, a major argument leads them to a wilderness retreat, where they’re forced to confront not only their lack of outdoor skills but also their marriage.

At its core, this is really Sarah’s story. Her journey is deeply layered, intertwined with the grief of losing her mother, and after years of leaning so heavily on Caleb, she feels a growing need to stand on her own. Caleb is a fantastic guy, so the resentment toward him is sometimes difficult to read, but I completely understood where Sarah was coming from.

I can really appreciate a healthy, loving couple working through challenges together rather than falling into unnecessary angst. The conversations on marriage, partnership, and personal growth within a relationship were great. But I don’t know—on an entertainment level, I just wasn’t completely invested. It was a little too low-stakes for me.
