Rules for a Knight by Ethan Hawke

3.0

Something something, blah blah, about the tradition of people writing self-help/fatherly advice books. It is long, and this continues it's overwrought-ness.

I liked some of the sections, but I can't honestly say there was anything in here that I hadn't found from some other place. Literally, many of the anecdotes that are peddled as newly discovered agéd Hawke family advice penned before the ultimate adventure of a prior patriarch I recognize from various zen parables, stories from the Pali canon, and other Buddhist literature, and that was just the stuff I recognized. I assume most of the stories have been lifted from other sources and retooled to fit the formatting. Generally non-religious; and some effort was made to make a nod towards leaving the gendering of advice out considering the age and 'knightlyness' it espouses.

The collection is brief, and on the whole, nice to review the points. The song of the forest dweller at the end leaves some art to be desired, but it could be worse.

Listened: Quality reading, perhaps not as great in song.
