The Hours by Michael Cunningham

2.0

This felt like one of those weird circumstances of “right book, wrong time.” I wanted to love it, but I just could not get into it. It was written in a very classic style, so I’m not going to lie, it went over my head in some parts. But I also just really couldn’t connect with the characters for some reason. I had some trouble following the three storylines. There were definitely certain sections I followed and was more invested in than others. However, I will say I love how they came together in the end. To find out that Richie, Laura’s son, was actually Richard in the end was shocking. My jaw actually dropped.

This book is actually combined with Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf as this is Michael Cunningham’s take on the story. So on one side of the book it is The Hours and on the other side of the book is Mrs. Dalloway. It is possible I made a mistake by reading The Hours before Mrs. Dalloway. Perhaps I needed the context of reading Mrs. Dalloway first.

I do think I might try this book again in the future, because again, I wanted to love it, but I do think it is possible that it was the wrong time for me to read it.
