Compelling cast of characters that felt at home in a future informed by contemporary discussions of biotech and ai.
The biggest question the book ask are about the free nature of humanity and ai- are the desires, thoughts, and emotions of ai /less than/ for having parameters when humanity is similarly fallible and limited? The book also illustrates humanity in the process of reprogramming itself via drugs to better fit within advanced capitalism. There are also discussions about the ethics of piracy (the main character is /literally/ a seafaring pirate of pharmaceuticals), the role of academia as a safe harbor, and gender in ai.
A good portion of the book also involves the development of 2/3 romantic relationships.
This was a really enjoyable read and my only gripe is that the third act switches perspectives so regularly that it starts to feel like a montage. A good read for fans of the genre.
