The Magic Fish: A Graphic Novel by Trung Le Nguyen

5.0

Incredibly beautiful art with a heart-achingly powerful story. My hold on this library book was timely, with all the vitriolic rhetoric in the news about immigrants lately this book felt extra raw to read.

Not only is it a poignant story about immigrants, there’s the additional layer of a young queer boy struggling with how to come out to his family — and a really horrible, even if well meaning, teacher stepping in with a priest in tow, telling this young child that coming out as gay would be akin to a death in the family, right on the heels of his grandmother dying. The way my heart broke for him.
