The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

The Vanishing Half
Blood under the bridge.
Blood ties relinquished into the world are not easily recovered either. Stella and Desiree, one soul in two bodies, so poignantly show what we all hopefully know: we segregate, white, whiter, black, blacker, good, better, women, men. Nature doesn't care. To Nature we are all one, just Human beings, and our bonds, biological or the stronger ones, based on love, stand. Everything else is fleeting, foolish, and inconsequential.
