I’m from Minnesota too! So yay for Minnesotan authors and plots. I enjoyed the parody of the hospital systems (memorial west lol) and keeping the Mayo the same lol. Honestly, Jacob is such a dream, the epitome of man written by woman. I also really liked how Briana’s trust issues were addressed alongside Jacob’s anxiety. It made them feel flawed and real. Spoilers past this point on what I didn’t like:
So first of all, I’m not a big surprise pregnancy fan. Like realistically, why wouldn’t she be on a pill or have an implant? She’s a doctor, it would not be difficult for her. Especially with her need for control? That just felt a bit forced. Secondly, I hate her friendship with Amy. It almost made me drop this down to a three star rating, but the letter writing and the plant- and dog-loving man who journals saved it. If Briana was actually petty, she would not have forgiven that hag for the shit she put Jacob through. Third, I wish there was more about the hospital in there. The first quarter of the book had stuff about hospital life and then it sort of dropped off. When you work in a hospital it is a major part of your life. Lastly, maybe I’ve read too much smut, but the spice was kind of lacking.
Graphic: Chronic illness, Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, Grief, Abandonment
Moderate: Sexual content, Suicidal thoughts, Vomit, Pregnancy
Minor: Miscarriage, Toxic relationship, Blood, Alcohol
Additional warnings: parentification, mentions of previous toxic relationship and cheating, medical procedures, depression, anxiety
If you are worried about animals in the books you read (because dogs and cats are better than people): no animals are harmed or die. A cat is threatened with a bath and that’s it. There are mentions of helping an abused dog regain trust. The dog is very loved now don’t worry.
