Giju's Gift by Britt Wilson, Veronika Barinova, Brandon Mitchell

4.0

Brandon Mitchell's new Adventures of the Pugulatmu'j series is off to a promising start with Giju's Gift. We follow Mali, a young Mi'gmaq girl, and Puug, a pugulatmu'j (a type of magical benign little person from traditional stories), as they become friends and try to fight jenu (a type of malevolent giant from traditional stories) and find a series of items. The story is filled with traditional Mi'gmaq stories and values, while also being full of fun adventure, great lessons to learn, and a touch of history. The art isn't to my usual taste, but it's cute and suits the story. It's not very long (under a hundred pages), but that makes it ideal for kids, especially the younger end of middle grade. I'm looking forward to seeing where volume two takes the story!
