Jubilee by Margaret Walker

This book was heartbreaking and powerful. I also enjoyed the ending, which had me feeling the most emotional than at any other point in this book.

This certainly isn’t the first book that I’ve read which encapsulates the antebellum south and it’s not the first generational story of enslavement I’ve ever read either. However, this book does stand out because it focuses on the same people within the same family who are made to persevere through enslavement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. I think that is what makes this book so powerful after all - that this family remained together through everything, something that was truly rare in the antebellum South.
