Dreaming of Elsewhere: Observations on Home by Esi Edugyan

5.0

"But where are you from, really?" Edugyan discusses the assumed statelessness of a woman born in Canada of Ghanian blood. She delves into the belief that Canadian Stories demand a certain structure and setting, lest they misrepresent our nation. She insists that Home is a construct, a place to believe in, as well as your place within it. What makes a story Canadian is its author, no matter how many generations they have lived on this land. Edugyan is opening the doors even further, hoisting the stopper, to ensure more and more stories that follow their own narrative are not only written, but accepted as an essentially Canadian tale.
