The Hogarth Shakespeare collection is so interesting and I love the adaptations I’ve read so far. Macbeth as a gritty 70s cop drama in Scotland? Loved it.
This retelling brought up a lot of the underlying themes that tend to get missed in the original play - mostly, that there are very few people who are wholly blameless and everyone is a little bit selfish - it’s what makes us human. I also really enjoyed how the famous speeches like “Out, out, damned spot!” and “All the world’s a stage” were adapted to fit the setting. They still very much contained the essence of the monologues but also fit right into this world.
I’ve never read anything by Jo Nesbø before but will definitely be checking out some of his other work. This was a masterclass cop procedural even without the Macbeth elements.
