Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey

A long-time favorite, this is the first time I've ever listened to it. While I still prefer the print copy, this was better than nothing, and not a bad way to revisit the series.
Menolly lives in an isolated, rigid, hard-working sea hold, where life revolves around fishing and traditional roles. Her musical abilities are largely unappreciated and the story begins as her mentor has just died. With his passing, Menolly's tuneful proclivities are harshly deterred. After a devastating injury, which her mother allows to heal poorly to inhibit her playing, Menolly runs away.
Her dreams of becoming a harper are dashed, but she survives on her own in the wilderness for several weeks, impressing a third of a clutch of fire dragons before being picked up by a dragon rider. Her life all of a sudden opens up with possibilty.
