Dead Silence is a standalone horror sci-fi novel by author, S.A. Barnes. S.A. Barnes is a pseudonym of author, Stacey Kade who writes romance and young adult novels.

Dead Silence is described by Goodreads as being Titanic meets The Shining, but I’d say for me it has more Event Horizon or Ghost Ship vibes.

The story follows Claire Kovalik and her crew when they pick up a distress beacon (yeah that never ends well!) which leads them to the decades missing luxury space-liner “The Aurora”. Upon boarding the ship they quickly realise something is very wrong. They rush to find out what happened on board the ship before they meet the same deadly fate.

Okay first the good stuff. I enjoyed the creepy ship setting and felt the author was able to build up suspenseful and terror well. The characters were well rounded and likeable and I felt connected to them caring about their fates. The unreliable narrator elements due to the main characters past trauma and memory loss added to the suspense and unease. I was right along side the characters as they desperately tried to figure out what happened before it was too late.

The book had two very distinctive parts, the events leading up to a crucial plot point and then after that. Told in flashbacks and recaps initially, the book feels like it kind of spoils what happens before it does. While this creates tension in that you know what fate awaits them, I’d have preferred to have been surprised a little bit more.

The pace in the middle felt a little slow but the last third really ramped up and was a power to the finish. I enjoyed the mix of sci fi and horror elements and was impressed overall with the style of book and the authors writing. I listened to the first half on audiobook and then switched to e-book to finish off.
