Hot Blooded by Donna Grant

This was another one where not a lot really seemed to happen. Fortunately, it was a bit better than the last time. We don't really see much of the bad guys at all, but what surprised me the most was how little of Balladyn we get. I thought he'd be around a lot more considering his freakin' castle was just destroyed.

Rhi finally makes an appearance before her queen and some of the Kings as well, but you can tell right away that she is markedly different now. Which is really sad because her personality before added much to the story and the lives of those around her. I'm slightly worried about what she's planning to do going forward, especially involving Ulrik. Hopefully though, she'll find her way soon enough.

Rhys is one of my favorite Kings and he suffers much in this book stemming from his wound from the last, though he tries hard to hide it. He also makes a decision that could change his life as a King forever. But I'm hoping they're going to find a way around it somehow.

Con is still as confusing as ever. I thought it funny how at the beginning he said he would parade every unmated King in front of Iona if that's what it took to keep her there. But then later he was pushing Laith to stay out of her life. He's also up to something with Light Queen too I think as he's gone from the manor a lot and nobody knows what he's up to.

Okay, so Iona has finally come back to Scotland after being away for 20 years. When she was 8, her mother took her and left her father. While filling her head with misconceptions about him that she only learns to be false when the whole village talks him up. She was on her way to visit him when she didn't make it in time and he was murdered. The problem with that lies in the fact that the Campbells have a pact (bound by magic) with Dreagan that they will never sell their land and they will always protect what's hidden there and keep their secret. But with not speaking to her father in so long, Iona had no idea about what she was to be keeping safe. So it falls to the Dragon Kings to fill her in and hope she remains. At first Laith wants nothing to do with it, but when he first lays eyes on Iona he wants to always be near her. Which works out because she is undeniably drawn to him as well. Helping the two of them in a way is that fact that Iona quickly befriends Sammi. When it's obvious that Iona's life is now also in danger, Laith tries to explain some of the secrets. He does a little better than he thinks because Iona seeks him out for more information. She takes everything rather well, even when she learns of the Warriors, Fae and Druids.

Much of the action isn't until the end when it comes out that Iona has been being used as a way to spy on Dreagan. Finally the Dark come into play as well as Ulrik in a more active roll as well. That fight is really short and I can't help but wonder what Ulrik hoped to accomplish by instigating what he did for it to happen. It was also a pleasant surprise that this time the couple did not get mated at the end. Oh, we all know it will happen, but just not yet. It was nice to have one book in this series (so far at least) that didn't have insta-love.

I really am curious to find out more about Lily in Rhys' book next though...
