✨What it is about:
This is a historical novel that spans two countries and around twenty years, about two mothers who make unthinkable choices in the face of the Nazi occupation. ✨
💭 My Thoughts:
This was an emotional story about motherhood, and the sacrifices you make for your children. It is quite remarkable the lengths a mother will go to protect her children, and Harmel portrayed this beautifully. The choices you make really have an impact, and reading this made me think about that a lot. It was heartbreaking and very powerful in that sense. I think mothers will resonate with a lot that goes on in this story. I particularly did not like Juliette, one of the main characters, and that dislike grew as I kept reading the book unfortunately. I figured out early on how the story would end, which isn’t my preference, but that didn’t take too much away from my enjoyment of the story. I found that the ending came off a little more dramatic/over the top than I would have liked. However, I still enjoyed the story and it proved to be well researched. I really liked the author’s note at the end of the book as well, which gave me more insight on the choices she made. I really like when authors include notes like this at the end of their stories.
