The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
5.0

A reread, not my first.

Ah, we know who did it and we have a pretty good guess as to why; we can even assemble the how if we're careful, before we get to the end. It's the poignancy of loves lost, mentors silenced by time, learning destroyed by those meant to protect it, the passing of heresies worthy of burning men alive into darkness, the decay of things, the translation, retranslation, mistranslation, falsity, fantasy...nostalgic without being oversimplified. I love this book. I even liked the new translation. RIP, William Weaver.
