Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This was not a bad book, but perhaps not my cup of tea; I don’t think I’ll read the rest of the series. I’m not sure if it was the writing style or the characters, but the author never really captured my attention and I never felt immersed in this novel and world the way you should be in a dystopian tale. The main character feels like a Mary Sue (or Captain Cardboard if you are a BTVS fan), and I just couldn’t connect with him. A lot happens with the plot, but I was still just so unengaged and sometimes bored much of the time. Much of the “empowering speeches” felt contrived or pretentious, almost like bad political propaganda. That being said, it’s an interesting concept and a cool world and I wish I liked it more. Maybe someone will adapt it for TV, I might like that more!
