I came into this book clearly underestimating it. I had never read an omegaverse story previously and why choose is not a trope that I typically read. However, I loved this book. I could not stop reading it! If you are a spicy reader the spice is spicing on all cylinders 🌶️.
It is a bit of a contradiction, because with as little plot as there is this book should not have any business being over 600 pages (that is not a dig just a fact, bear with me). Enola Douglas is a genius writer and the level of detail that she weaves into her writing is breathtaking. As the reader, you get to see every step of the journey. No big time jumps or montages. You experience everything, which makes for a longer book. Think along the lines of Steinbeck level detail but without having to read an entire chapter about a turtle crossing a road. Not everyone will enjoy that style, but I thought it brought an amazing depth to the character development.
The MMCs are gold standard characters. Learning what they went through as young brothers broke my Momma heart. I cried for Alarik several times. They are written as 2 sides of the same coin. The amount of respect and care that they show for the FMC and each other is incredible.
My only point of disappointment with this book is the lack of development on the main mystery of the story. By the end you really don't learn anything significant about the mystery plotline. We do learn one additional person that is involved, but it was fairly obvious. From the synopsis of the next book, I think this plotline will be a bigger focus in that story which I am looking forward to. I do understand why we likely didn't get far into the mystery as it likely would have added several hundred additional pages to the story.
TLDR; beautiful character development, spice spice spice, and I am very much looking forward to book 2.
