Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey

4.0

Honestly, what a novel. I've watched the show first, and reading the books is a delight in expanded inner lives for our point of view characters, as well as discovering what differences had to be made to transport an excellent story into a different medium.

I'm weirdly hesitant to engage with science fiction usually, as I often struggle to make heads or tails of the works dedicated to scientific accuracy with elitist fervour, or find myself bored with the apple product sleekness and "science magic" of the more science-fantasy oriented works. The Expanse hits an incredibly much needed work of 'realistic sci-fi, but written in a way that's not as dry as an instruction manual', drawing you into a world built with a deep understanding of human nature.

Believable characters whose ideals and preconceived notions are challenged, a world in which the new, alien threat isn't the only issue on the table, but rather humanity's own short comings and greed drive much of the conflict. And at the core, characters to love and empathize with.

After a long dry spell of barely touching books, I can honestly say that Leviathan Wakes has reinvigorated my love of reading, and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series, while I desperately wait for season 6 of the show.
