Macbeth by Jo Nesbø

This is an excellent example of a character-driven story, and I was living for it.

It should be noted that this is NOT a light read. It's got heavy themes and really hits hard that life is just not fair. That being said, it tackles these themes through the lens of human motivation, and the actions of people that make life as unfair as it is.

The author strikes a balance between gritty / noir, and almost poetic writing. Many themes are touched upon between characters through dialogue, in a way that's not very realistic but that I was stilled fully absorbed by.

The characters are, in my eyes, very well fleshed out. The characters are followed intelligently, in such a way that keeps you guessing as to what actions will be taken next, or what other characters are up to. It's all woven together quite masterfully, and there were certain points where my jaw hit the floor.

If heavy themes and violent scenes are not a deterrent, I strongly recommend this book. It's my first time reading a novel from this author, and I can say that if he writing is consistent, I look forward to reading some of his other works.
