Expecting It All by Janet Bruins

hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted relaxing medium-paced

4.25

As a mother of one-year-old twins who took a career break to care for my children and run the household, I am interested in other women's experiences in raising children while pursuing what brings them joy and sanity. Seeing the title Expecting It All immediately caught my attention—I think all soon-to-be mothers dream of "having it all," or at least wonder IF it's even possible. I'm no exception.

Janet Bruins reveals the behind-the-scenes of what it means to be a mother and manage a household with both toddlers and older children. She offers a perspective on what one might expect even a decade or two later. It's invaluable knowledge. The overview is nice too. She suggests several topics for discussion: family finance, time management, and mental and physical health.
I fell in love with her concept that you are not obliged to have it all, but it's okay to expect and aim for it. It's okay not to be the sacrificing-all type of mother and to actually take time to care for yourself. The author correctly pointed out that most time-management or money-saving hacks are not relatable to parents and provided practical advice that works right away.

Keeping in mind the practicality of the book, I wish there were sections with tasks to really practice the insights that Janet shared with the reader. I think it would complement the book nicely.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amplify Publishing for trusting me with the advanced copy of the book.
