Anne of Green Gables
by L.M. Montgomery
I knew by page 15 that I was going to love this book because Anne and I are clearly kindred spirits.
'Well, that is one of the things to find out sometime. Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive-it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there? But am I talking too much? People are always telling me I do. Would you rather I didn't talk? If you say so I'll stop. I can stop when I make up my mind to it, although it's difficult.'
OH MY GOSH. I AM SMITTEN AS A KITTEN.
Yes, I read this for the first time in my mid-(*cough* to upper *cough*)thirties. No, I had not ever read a page of this as a child or watched any show or movie about it.
And even so (or maybe because of it), this was quite possibly the most lovely, heartwarming book I've ever read.
Unless you are a cold-hearted heathen, I don't know how you could possibly fail to be utterly charmed by Avonlea, Green Gables, the people of Avonlea (ohmygodMatthew ❤️❤️❤️), and most of all - Anne.
I'm not going to recap anything as this is a pretty popular book (for good reason!). I'm just going to say that this was so sweet and wholesome and funny and emotional and interesting. And that the only thing that kept me from going into a deep and dark depression upon finishing was the comfort that I have all the others in the series sitting on my bookshelf downstairs (late night impulse purchases for the win!).
Read this if you haven't yet. Seriously just do it. Unless you hate love and hugs, which is what this book feels like.
'Well now, I'd rather have you than a dozen boys, Anne,' said Matthew patting her hand. 'Just mind you that-rather than a dozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn't a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? It was a girl - my girl - that I'm proud of.'
